Character Canon: OC
Background: Antonio was born in the city of of Málaga in Andalusia, Spain. He had a fairly normal life until he was 8, when it first came to light that he had a persistent aura that suppressed magic, bringing him and his family to the attention of a group of cultists who believed that he must be destroyed as part of some prophecy. He came home from school one day to find his home burning and his parents gone, and was soon snatched up by the cultists.
Before they got far, the cultists were engaged by a local superhero group called the Knights of Montessa, who were dedicated to fighting supernatural villains. They defeated the cultists and saved Antonio, but his parents were never found and the cultists never revealed any information. Antonio was adopted into their order, and they trained him to fight and to do more with his latent power.
As he trained and the Order studied him, more was discovered about his power: Antonio was a natural gate for the otherworldly energies of another dimension called Caelorum. The flow of these energies was strong enough that it disrupted any power that relied on the energies of another dimension (such as most magic and some other superpowers) when used too close to the boy. As he trained, he learned to suppress and increase the flow of energy, which decreased or increased the area in which magic was disrupted, respectively. When he got older, he also learned to channel the energy into certain materials (metal was the easiest), temporarily making them stronger.
When they felt he was ready, the Order made him into a full-fledged superhero. At 15, they gifted him with a special suit of armor and shield, a magic sword, and a magic headband, and dubbed him "Escudo". Less than a year later, the Order once again came into conflict with the same cultists that attacked Antonio in his youth, babbling about some gem that would be a portal for their demon lord master to bring the end of the world. Again, the defeated cultists revealed nothing, and the Order decided they must split up and search the world for this gem. The council decided that Escudo would search in Venture City, and made arrangements with the Omegafriends to accommodate him as part of "youth foreign exchange" program, without informing them of the real reason for his visit.
Personality: Escudo is a good person at heart, and tries to always do the right thing. However, he's been raised to see things as a bit too black and white, and struggles when it comes to legitimately grey areas. As a hero, he is a bit overzealous and passionate sometimes, and sometimes jumps to conclusions.
As a civilian, he feels a bit lost in a new country on his own. He is mostly fluent in English but slips up sometimes, and is rather self-conscious about it. He secretly misses his home quite a bit. He can be mildly sexist in the "girls are damsels that must be protected" mindset, which I hope for him to overcome.
Powers:Escudo is a conduit for extra-dimensional energies which constantly flow out from him, creating a sort of 'aura' that is imperceptible to the vast majority of people. These have a couple effects:
1. Any power that comes from or is fueled by another dimension (such as almost all magic, as well as certain other superpowers) is completely negated within Escudo's aura. Without any effort (or even consciousness) on his part, this aura extends about 5 feet away from him in all directions.
2. With a small bit of exertion, he can reduce the size of this aura to a few inches, or expand it to 10 feet away. With more exertion, he can extend the field even further, but the larger he makes it and the longer he sustains it will physically exhaust him more and more. For example, he could extend the field to a 100-ft radius around him, but this would physically tax him about as much as if he were lifting 100 lbs over his head for the same length of time.
3. He can temporarily imbue these energies into non-living objects, making them stronger. Metal is the easiest material to imbue, becoming roughly 10 times stronger. Woods and plastics become about 5 times as strong, and other materials are less effective by varying degrees. This imbuement also seems to redirect the flow of other more mundane energies (such as kinetic or heat energy) through the materials, offering some protection from explosions and the like. Escudo can imbue his armor and shield with little difficulty, but larger objects again require proportionally more effort.
4. There may be other uses for these energies that Antonio hasn't discovered yet.
The Order of Montessa also gave Escudo special equipment to aid him on his quest, some of which has been enchanted. (These items also draw their power from Caelorum and are not adversely effected by Escudo's aura):
1.
The Armor and Shield of Montessa: these items are not magical. They are pieces of armor that have been crafted in the style of the late-middle-ages suits of plate armor by the master smiths of the Order. Because of Escudo's gift, they have been made with better materials than steel: a sort of alloy of titanium and depleted promethium.
2.
The Sword of Caelorum. This XIIa-style sword with a 35 inch blade was enchanted centuries ago with the energies of Caelorum. It is effectively indestructible and demonstrates cutting power that surpasses what should be physically possible for any single blade.
3. Venda de Caelorum. This headband can be attuned to certain items and store them in and retrieve them from Caelorum. With a touch and a thought, Escudo's armor, shield, and sword can be stored away and be brought back to earth in a shimmer of light. When brought back to earth, they automatically appear on Escudo's body, ready to be used.
